Are Aussie seagrasses safe?

Post by TeaDragon » Tue Oct 12, 2021 10:03 pm

Hey there!
I keep Aussies and I'm trying my best to find things they actually want to eat.
I collected some seagrass that was washed up at the local beach the other day. Are most seagrasses safe to feed or would it be better to not risk it? Is there a better alternate sea plant to feed them?
Please note, I have rinsed and am freezing it to remove pests.

More like a half hour drive lol, but I understand what you mean.
It is very fortunate that I live so relatively close to the natural habitat of my crabs, it makes gathering goods for them somewhat convenient. Not shells though, been looking for good shells for ages now lol

They’re nutritionally okay, but be warned that they will absorb any contaminates in the area, including microplastics, mercury, and chemical waste.

Oh wow. Thank you for that heads up. Would mangrove leaves and wood also potentially pose a risk?

It can, yes. Use your best judgement when collecting from water bodies. Usually the farther from humans the better.
