Oyster Shells and Food Dishes

Post by itsmellllly » Mon Nov 29, 2021 5:51 pm

I recently got two hermit crabs and have been using an oyster
shell I found on the beach as a food dish temporarily until I can
get an actual food dish. However, I was thinking about just
getting more oyster shells to use for food dishes since I know
hermit crabs like them. Does anyone have good recommendations
as to where I could get some more? I want to make sure I don't
get any that may have been treated by harmful chemicals or
something potentially dangerous for the hermit crabs.

I was also thinking about maybe using a small ceramic tray for the food dish instead. Could I technically just use one of those plain trinket/jewelry dishes on Amazon or something if I made sure to wash it first? I wasn’t sure because I don’t know if they have chemicals or anything on them that could be bad for the hermit crabs if they ate off them.

These paint dishes are popular too. If you have a craft store nearby Image

I use lids from jars/containers and they work great. My favorites are peanut butter lids and those really large round lids from pretzel/peanuts/candy containers.

Yes! I used to use those and they work fine. I would keep more than one in the tank though, and they can get knocked over easily.
