Hairy Bittercress

Post by CrabbyLover77 » Fri Apr 07, 2023 3:53 pm

Is Hairy Bittercress safe for hermits? I had to Google what the crazy plant was that is all over my yard, and found out that's what it is. Apparently the flowers and greens/stems are safe for people to eat and have a peppery taste. Thanks!Image

I don’t know of anyone who’s tried giving it to their crabs but it’s in the mustard and cabbage family (Brassicaceae) with several other crab-safe veggies. I forage garlic mustard for mine from time to time.

It really should be safe. There's absolutely no reason for it not to be, given the type of plant it is.

That said, I tried it years ago, in the teeny tank that I used to have. After feeding it a few times in the span of a couple of weeks I had several very unexpected deaths. Rationally I know it couldn't have been the bittercress, but it spooked me so much honestly I've never given it to my crabs again.

Thanks Wodes. Maybe I'll just avoid it then. I'm one of those people that if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any at all. So I'll just play it safe.
