Sour Grass

Post by glacier44 » Sun Jul 13, 2008 10:10 pm

Rumex acetosella
Sheep Sorrel or Sour Grass

Edible for humans slightly lemony. I grew up nibbling the stuff. :P Anyone know if it's crabby safe?

sorrels are generally thought to be safe or non-toxic, but they should be fed in small amounts and not on a regular basis because they are very high in oxalic acids (that's what makes them sour) which blocks absorption of minerals including calcium. It may help to steam them to inactivate some of the oxalic acids. Spinach is another one hight in oxalic acid or oxalates.

Thanks! That's pretty much what I was thinking but hadn't had time to really dig in deep and research it more.

I LOVED to nibble it as a child. We would pick it and pretend it was "salad" when we were playing in our fort :D
