Are daffodils okay?

Post by Silver Buttons » Wed Apr 06, 2011 9:01 am

A friend gave me three daffodils from her garden. They dried out nicely, so I'm wondering if it's okay to give my crabs a bit of the flowers. I didn't see thme on either the safe or unsafe lists. Has anyone tried them?

I was told no, but I only got one response, so I'd just rather be safe than sorry. :?

Looking into it, I don't think I'd risk it either. Just because a flower is poisonous to us doesn't mean that it'll harm the crabs, so it can be hard to judge by inedible flower lists. There is more information available for other species that makes me think it's not safe, though.

Daffodils are poisonous to companion animals like dogs, and there's warning about feeding them to rabbit and tortoises. Deer, wild rabbits and moles won't eat them either, and the bulbs are often sold as being pest-resistant. I have also never seen a daffodil or jonquil with bug damage, so I really don't think anything will eat them!

Thanks for the info! Glad I asked. I didn't want to take a chance without inquiring first. :)
