How to serve sugar cane?

Post by SoulLonely » Tue Jun 28, 2011 9:54 pm

I had bought a branch of sugar cane a few weeks ago and it has been sitting in the fridge because I don't know how to serve it to my hermies! (does it go bad??) I was thinking of washing it and just putting it in the tank for a climber/chewy thing. Any suggestions? Also, how do I know when it goes bad? It looks like it did when I first got it.. but I'm always paranoid! Thanks guys :)

Like any vegetation it will rot when placed into heat and humidity. Kinda of like fresh bamboo - when still rooted it's fine but when cut it'll rot.

I would keep it either refrigerated until you're ready, or cut it all up at once and freeze the excess so you can spread it out over a few months. Raw will be fine, and they probably only need little pieces. (Not that it's easy to cut!)

I've been looking for fresh sugar cane for years now. I got it once from the store when I was little and I loved the taste of it. :) (Hacked off pieces and chewed on them to get the sugar out.) It's really hard to find!
