What's on today's menu & recipe sharing ~2013~

Post by sandra03 » Tue Jan 08, 2013 11:46 am

So it seems like the new crabs might be as picky as Spongebob. In both tanks I have flukers turtle medley, nobody is touching it! I thought they were supposed to like this stuff lol. Also a dish of fresh fruit and veg (celery, green and orange bell pepper, mushroom, carrot, broccoli leaves.. ok i guess its just veg right now) which I think they've picked at, hard to tell cause they keep walking through and dragging it all over. And I included a dish of dry stuff, the food they were getting at their previous home so there's something they're used to, it's Hbh variety bites and cookies.plus added some almond cashew and cuttlebone. I've seen the little one eating out of this dish at least. Who knows what they do when I'm not watching though, they're too skittish and usually hide when I'm close by.
Spongebob doesn't seem to be eating much right now either, still a bit stressed from switching tanks I guess. Sh does eat a lot of moss though lol
When I change out the food tonight I'm going to try blueberries and raspberries and shrimp

Ham & Beans tonight. Cooked spiral ham (no seasonings of course), green beans, and potatoes. It's always nice when what I am eating can be used for the crabs after I take out a portion before seasoning it for me. Think the dogs will have some too tonight... ran out of dog food.

Ham is never okay - the curing process for ham involves a lot of chemicals and seasonings so that it's not safe from the package, even if you haven't added anything to it after. Straight pork would be fine, but cured meats like ham, bologna, hot dogs, and deli meats are not safe.

My boyfriend and I went out to sushi and took home one of the sushi rolls for the crabs =) They got one with rice, cucumber, crab, and flying fish eggs. We made sure there was no sauce or anything. Then tonight I gave them some tuna and put the rest outside in hopes to feed one of the stray cats =)

Eh they dont eat half of what I put in there anyway (cause the cuttlebone is oh so much better) so I doubt any of them actually ate it. I don't usually give them regular meat, just fish and other fresh seafood. Occasionally chicken and chicken livers but I cook those from raw and feed the livers raw. *shrugs* Oh well.

I think everyone is molting but just in case, I'm putting in corn, turkey, celery, mango, and avocado, oh and some crushed oyster shell. I've notice that they won't touch the food until it's just about to mold, then they go crazy.

Tonight for my own dinner I made Bruschetta Chicken which turned out really yummy. I made the hermies a safe version and someone went to town on the topping... My cousin and my crabs seem to prefer their food like 5 minutes from being fuzzy rather than nice and fresh

I still don't know the habits and preferences of my new guys so I've been leaving things in longer than I normally would. Spongebob prefers things to be pretty fresh I think. we don't keep a ton of fruit in the house so I bought a bag of frozen mixed berries to make sure I'd always have something on hand for the crabs for some variety. plus I use them now and then for myself lol. made pancakes yesterday with berries and sliced banana on top so the crabs got some berries and banana too. since there's 4 now I put in a whole small strawberry, raspberry and blueberry and a big slice of banana, thinking they'd have fun picking them apart. half of it's been dragged out of the dish but they keep walking through the food dishes so I don't know if anyone was eating or if it just got pushed around. doesn't look very.. munched lol. been keeping the dry food in there for a few days and I don't think they're touching it. not the bugs anyway, the freeze dried cricket and mealworms I put in are all still intact.

Went shopping for airstones, came home with dinner for the crabs. Dried mango, dried banana, dried strawberries, non salted sardines (yuck!), and some sweet potatoe baby food.

Tonight its kiwi, strawberries, HBH Hermit Crab cookies (as a treat), and a cricket and shrimp from Fluker's Turtle Medley Treat. :)
I am a proud owner of five hermies named Leopard (PP), Ribbon (PP), Kremer (PP), Queenie (PP), and Sunny (E). I have been crabbing since 6/16/11, and have been loving and learning so much about them ever since! My family and I also own a husky, a cat, and a bunch of freshwater fish.

Tonight on the fresh tray they get an array of carrots, cucumber(first time for them), kiwi(first time for them), and last but definitely not least their favorite- apple's. In the dry food they get their everyday mixture that I made - it has oatmeal, rice, cuttlebone, sea salt, dried krill, and spirulina all blended together. Along with left over king crab shell for some added awesome nutrients! Let's hope that amazingness is enough to get them outta their tunnel system they have spent two weeks making (All new PPs and their day time digging habits. Only One is molting I believe)
Momma to 7 PP Dasher (female), Rocco (male), Sona(unknown), Switch (male), Violet (female), Cling (male), Nona (female) and two happy female chinchillas Luna and Ava. (3 successful molts (and one pending) in 3 months of being a crabber)

I got an order of yummy treats in the mail yesterday so they have dried hibiscus petals and dandelion leaves to try. The dish was disturbed and bits everywhere on the substrate but not sure if they were eating or just walking through it as they're prone to doing. Lol. Also have their crushed dried bugs and cuttlebone and some fruit and veg and a chunk of ground beef which nobody is interested in

Mine are getting a crab omelet - scrambled egg with the eggshell crushed and mixed in along with spinach and dried mysis shrimp, cooked and topped with EVOO. And a piece of banana topped with honey.

on tonight's menu we have some ground beef, organic natural peanut butter, strawberry, raspberry, carrot, green bean, and the usual mix of dried bugs and cuttlebone, almonds and walnuts, and bits of alfalfa, red clover, cellendula and hibiscus, and i think some dandelion. on Spongebob's menu: moss and dirt. possibly some peanut butter but only if it's covered in moss and dirt.
