Tuna for Cats?
OK I have been having a lot of trouble getting my crabs to eat ANYTHING! I am actually starting to worry, I try to feed a variety of foods, including apples broccoli, green beans, coconut, cheerios, grapes, banana, oranges, squash, almonds, peanuts, peanut butter, chicken, turkey, and occasionally beef, but maybe us humans just don't have enough variety in our diets... I don't know. We eat a lot of Chicken and turkey in our house, all fresh or frozen, not processed, but not much fish or seafood and so far the crabs won't touch any of it. But they will come for fish (I feed the kids frozen fish sticks about once a month and have taken the very center of the leftover sticks and given it to the crabs and they eat it, they eat all of it) I don't want to give this to them because it is so processed but in looking for ANYTHING they will eat I tried it. so here is the question. I buy "Trader Joe's Tuna for cats", for the cats. It is always around and the ingredient(s) are tuna. no salt, no additives not even water, just tuna. this has got to be OK for the crabs right? I did buy a can of tuna for humans to try tonight, but the appeal of the tuna for cats is that it is always around. I would love to hear the groups thoughts on the subject. Thank you.

Re: Tuna for Cats?
Its probably ok. Tuna for cats is prob just unseasoned scraps, after tuna for people get the good cuts and a bit of flavor.
About your crabs not eating, how long has it been? My crabs probably didnt eat for a month, certain crabs probably 2 months. Now the popcorn pit is being decimated by an invisible aggressor, like 1/3 cup of popped corn GONE with only 5 small and under crabs.

I used to feed the crabs "Hermit Crab Food" that is literally all the bottle said, and it was always disturbed, hard to say how much was eaten since it is a powder basically. After finding this site I started adding coconut and cheerios and other fruits and vegetables, mid September I took away the "hermit crab food" and added proteins, whatever I had around the house (mostly chicken as mentioned) I have never seen protein disappear (except the fish sticks) and they don't seem to have eaten anything really since around Oct. 1st. 5 crabs total, 2 small ones are molting, 2 large crabs and one small are up and fairly active.

Try freeze dried foods from the fish and reptile aisles in rhe pet store. Crickets, mealworms, bloodworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and krill are all big hits with my colony. I also feed them freeze dried fruits and veggies from the reptile aisle.

Cooked egg is also a good source of protein. I had an old hardboiled egg and i chopped it up and froze it. I just grab some frozen crumbs here and there.
You can mix natural pb and honey and leave it out. It was instantly sampled in my tank (overnight).

Your crabs that arent eating might be getting ready to molt by slowing down and probably drinking more water.

Re: Tuna for Cats?
So after all the worrying, they did not eat tuna for cats anyway...
Also I think the two large one are getting ready to molt, Paulie changed into a MUCH bigger shell last night, gave me my first opportunity to look at the shell he came in, and although pretty (and natural) it had a hole in it on the inside... Poor guy, it was probably irritating his abdomen. AND Rainbow has be tunneling like crazy, when she's not just sitting in the saltwater. I am afraid 4 of my 5 crabs will be molting before long... winter i a good time for a molt right
Last note here, in all my searching for crab food they would eat, I did find something cool. for anyone near a Trader Joe's, they sell a seafood medley, frozen in a bag. includes shrimp, calamari, and scallops, it was $9 but I dumped them in a tupperware and put it in the freezer and pull out one at a time, this is a variety to choose from that will last a VERY long time. So far mine won't eat anything, raw or cooked, but I at least feel better that I am offering them MANY good options.
Thanks for all the feedback!

I am sooo needing that seafood medley in my life! Thanks for the tip! I will prob pulse the mix into a coarse consistency so i can feed just a teaspoon or something at a time. Let us know how your crabs like eating it!
