Pumpkin Pie for Crabbies

Post by CallaLily » Thu Nov 12, 2015 3:20 pm

I thought I'd share my crab safe (also mouse safe) pumpkin pie recipe. I know this proves I'm a bit crazy when it comes to my pets, but I think I'm in good company. :P

Image

Please keep in mind I am not a baker. I love baking but I'm usually following others' recipes, not coming up with my own, so please feel free to jump in with any suggestions if you think it could be improved.

CRUST:

Grind up some mealworms, flaxseed, and walnuts. Mix in just enough coconut oil to moisten, then press into the bottom of a lined muffin tin.

FILLING:

Whip together 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, 2 ounces of coconut milk ( milk not water!), and a little bit of molasses (I used about a tablespoon). Add in one gently beaten egg just until combined. Pour over crust and bake at 375F for about 20 minutes.

OPTIONAL:

If you're interested look up how to make whipped coconut milk, leaving out any sweeteners or flavorings of course, to top your pie with.

*Allow your pies to cool before carefully removing from the liner.

I had enough filling to do 3 large individual muffin tins. I left one crustless so I could try it (I'm so not interested in eating mealworms!). Very pumpkin-y and definitely not sweet enough for me but we'll see how the crabs (and mice!) like it.

That's awesome! :D You'll have to let us know what everyone thinks of it. Once I'm moved out, I'd love to try something like that for my crabby crew & hedgehog.

Definitely let us know what the crabs think! I may whip up a batch for mine and for my rats. They're bottomless pits so will probably think it's perfect. Thanks for the recipe :)

Mealworms and all, JJ? :D

Thanks everyone! If you try it, please share pics and let me know how your pets liked it.

The crabs definitely checked their slice out. They've knocked it over and tracked substrate all over it. The mice have nibbled theirs pretty good too.

Here's what's left of the slice (same one pictured above) this morning.

Yep. I figured at best they ate some, at worst they trampled it to death! No, they did really eat some. I saw either Lettie or Rameriz chowing on it right before I went to bed last night. When it still looked like a tiny slice of pie. :D I'll be giving the crabs in the other tank a slice tonight.

The mice liked it too. Daryl ate all the crust from his tiny slice and the girls nibbled the filling. I could of just split a slice between them.

I know this post is kind of old so please moderators don't hate on me, but if anyone wants to know they also love pumpkin bread.

I just get it from our local bakery. So it's like homemade.
