Will my crabs get stuck?

Post by TigerLily » Thu Dec 03, 2015 8:09 pm

I just bought some clear plastic containers for my saltwater and freshwater pools. They are smaller than I originally wanted, but I plan to do an upgrade once I see the bigger ones available and use these for hermit crab food storage (of course after a good wash). Now they have smooth sides and a crab wouldn't be able to climb up it. I plan on siliconing gravel to the sides, will my hermit crabs be able to climb that? Or should I lay them slightly slanted? Thank you!

Most likely they will have no problems using the gravel sides but I still recommend having some larger rocks, plants, ornaments as another quick/easy escape route. :) (never can be too cautious IMO)

Thanks! Will plastic plants be okay in a saltwater dish? I'm a bit worried about them degrading because of the salt.

Plastic plants will be fine in the saltwater dish if they're aquarium plants. You can find a variety of small ones for .99 cents at most pet stores. Regular plastic plants would probably be okay, too, but my thinking was, "Why not use ones specifically designed for an aquarium, just to be sure?"

I was planning on using aquarium grade plastic plants, but I was thinking the salt might degrade it or dissolve in the water (which would be bad!). I've never had salt water tanks before, so I have no idea what can and can't go in one. I think I may actually have some plastic aquarium plants laying around here somewhere! Thanks!

Silicon is safe in saltwater and it does not dissolve. :) However, it does not stick well to plastic - plastic is oil based and that breaks the bond.
