Nektar honey crystals

Post by me n my hermikids » Mon Dec 14, 2015 7:52 pm

I found this at the grocery. Do you think it would be safe for my hermit kids?

I don't see anything that is on the "not safe list" so I would say it's good! Let me know if your crabs like it- i've been looking for a honey substitute that isn't so sticky

I don't see anything in the ingredient that are cause for concern except the cane sugar. They can have it, but too much sugar is unhealthy for them, so I'd do it once a month or so as a treat.

This says "natural" on the label, I thought the care guides recommended organic food to avoid possible pesticide contamination.

Organic foods can use pesticides and fertilizers too-the laws state the product needs to meet a certain level of pesticides and fertilizers to be considered organic. Also there are "organic" fertilizers or pesticides that may be just as bad for crabs. This is why if you buy anything without knowing how it is grown there is some risk in that-even organic foods in your local grocery store. This is why I don't buy a lot of fresh (If I'm at the farmers market or organic food stores I may buy a few things). I almost always buy from online stores, other crabbers who I know will be very careful about what they sell, and often grow or harvest their own food so I know there's very little or no risk of yucky stuff used on it.

I don't think it would hurt them, but the drying process might remove some of the vitamins that are present in natural cane sugar and in the honey. Sweet things are not outright bad for them, but things like true honey, real sugar cane or unrefined organic cane sugar would be a better option.

Glad you asked this! I bought a container of this at least a month ago and meant to ask on here about it. Never remembered to before I got busy with moving & stuff. Guess I'll break it open to see what my guys think of it as an occasional treat. :)
