Oils

Post by mool » Thu Feb 25, 2016 5:10 pm

I never knew I could or should add oils to my LHC's diet. I rent a room to a guy whose diet is primarily vegan and raw--and of course, organic.

Some of the oils he has include evoo, sesame, hazelnut, pistachio, walnut and pecan.

Would all of the above be safe? Of them, which would you recommend as being the most beneficial?

Do you just offer the oil on its own, or do you mix it into another mixture or top dress it?

Sorry for the onslaught of questions, but I'm trying to improve my crabs' diet. I'm also lining up a few to adopt.

Well I hope you find some answers! I've been wondering myself but haven't gotten around to checking the safe foods list. Check it out in the food and water forum (: it's very helpful but if it isn't there then let's hope someone else here knows what's up with oils (:

I'm curious too. I thought if you gave them enough variety the fresh foods would have enough oils and fats in them to satisfy their needs.

I'm thinking of things like freeze dried shrimp, coconut, or other nuts, peanut butter, etc...

I thought so too, but I've read posts where people are offering evoo.

I like to drizzle oils like coconut and krill on certain foods for my crabs because they need the oil for exoskeleton and overall health.

A good healthy and varied diet that consists of foods that are loaded with naturally occurring oils should be enough but if you want to go the extra step then by all means do.

I've never tried evoo so I cant speak on that.

Oh sorry: evoo=extra virgin olive oil. It's a common abbreviation on cooking forums

Thanks for the tips. I also found coconut, apricot kernel and almond oils!

I have given my crabs olive oil and coconut oil before. The olive oil I either lightly cooked vegetables with or drizzled it over raw vegetables. Coconut oil is what I use when I make them popcorn. The nut oils should be safe, but I don't know for sure.

This. I do prepare some foods for them with oils occasionally. Like cooking eggs or chicken livers or popping popcorn in EVOO. I've also used coconut oil. There are also usually added oils in the nut butters I occasionally offer, usually palm oil. I wouldn't go overboard and offer extra/added oils daily but now and then is fine. I see no reason why any of the oils you've listed wouldn't be safe.

Thank you! I mixed some evoo with spirulina offered it. They got into it but who knows how much was consumed! I'll only do this once a month or so.

I now love having a raw vegan house mate!

Look for "first cold pressed" on the label. Those will be the highest quality oils. And don't heat them or used the leftover oil from your cooking. And even if they go rancid, the crabs won't mind.

All of these oils are cold pressed. Interesting about the crabs not minding rancid oil, but it makes perfect sense being they are scavengers!
