What to feed my crabs?
I just got in a huge shipment from deliciously crabby and there are so many choices? She threw in some samples and other product because it took her a little bit to get my shipment out. What do your PP's like to eat? I've been feeding mine some dry oats and fruit. I tried a piece of shrimp but they didn't seem to like it. Any favorite foods out there?

My crabs love oats, honey, walnuts, egg shell, and grapes. (Of course they like the hermit crab form of junk food.) The also will eat my homemade banana chips.

Re: What to feed my crabs?
I only have one crab up, the rest are molting, but I put in raw shrimp for the first time expecting him to go nuts, he didn't even touch it! I'll try again when the others are up to see if they're into it.
Mine love honey, blueberries, raisins, red bell pepper, noodles, popcorn and omega one fish food the most, far as I can tell. I also have a piece of mopani wood in the tank for climbing, they snack on that often. I cook nearly every day, and i pull out scraps for them as I go, rice, noodles, veggies, etc. I try to give a little of everything so they have choices, so I'll try to get in a carb, veggie, fruit and a protein, plus I'll toss in a piece of fruit, drizzle on honey, or put in a splat of peanut butter or coconut oil. We don't eat meat or seafood in my house anymore, I used to give scraps of chicken or beef, but now i add high quality fish food to make up the protein, as I also keep fish. Buying the frozen raw shrimp was a big deal for me, and that bratty crab didn't even touch it

Mine didn't like the shrimp either! I thought he would love it. So far he has liked apples, oats, grapes, and chicken. I'm excited about these new foods I bought and hope they like them.
Re: What to feed my crabs?
Some of mine go crazy over shrimp and some don't care for it. I'd say the favorites are venison, honey, and peanut-butter.

Re: What to feed my crabs?
I'm cheap so I prefer to make my own food instead of buying from "crab stores", since 99% of them are American and the currency exchange+shipping is brutal. That said, I did cave and bought some dehydrated Persimmon from Canadian Crab Connection (YAY CAD CURRENCY) and my crabs go nuts for that stuff, like crabby crack. I also bought a big bottle of Dried Red River shrimp and Fluker's Turtle Medley and my crabs love that too (bonus points because it will take them a year or two to eat all of it). Mine don't seem too keen on fresh fruits or veggies so I think I'll be sticking to dehydrated stuff since it lasts longer and is easier to clean. I also ordered a large sample bag from CCC so hopefully I'll find out if they like any other stuff.
But yeah, my crabs love Persimmon, Shrimp and Crickets.

Re: What to feed my crabs?
I've offered shrimp and mine didn't touch it and I've offered ground venison and they didn't like that either. Mine don't seem to be overly enthusiastic about honey, peanut butter, or banana either.
The one thing that seems to be a consistent favorite is baby salad greens. NOT what I would have expected at all, but it's their favorite fresh food.
Weirdos.

I bought freeze dried shrimp, they were eaten. The bowl next to it with bell pepper, Apple, strawberry banana purée, chia seeds, black beans and hibiscus flower appears untouched.

Re: What to feed my crabs?
Since so many people said their crabbys liked oats and walnuts, I recently tried both. I bought a $10.00 bag of organic oatmeal and a $16.00 bad of organic walnuts just to use a few grams out of each
They were moderately interested in both, and ate some of each but didn't exactly gorge on either.
I also bought a dozen organic, cage free eggs for $6.00 to offer them some shells. They ate the albumen out of the shells and nipped a bit at the edges. I'm freezing the rest of the shells as I use the eggs and will include them in some way in the future.
Yesterday the went nuts over my leaf mixture which contains the following: alfalfa, strawberry leaves, blackberry leaves, raspberry leaves, dandelion greens, nettles, shepherd's purse, and few more that I can't think of. It's always a hit.

Re: What to feed my crabs?
My Straws kind of pig out and everything - the PPs are a bit more finicky!
Some favorites, just to name a few; Coral Mineral Supplement from HCP, leaf litter, bee pollen & Flax.
Protein: dried Tilapia, Octopus, Squid, Tuna, River Shrimp, Plankton, Egg & Shell and Clams (my cat also gets a little piece of octopus and he loves it, weirdo) . They really like the grinded or shredded foods too, like Turkey and Chicken. Bloodworms are a hit with the straws. And of course, they LOVE PB & Honey!
For the fruit and veggie side fresh and shredded coconut- I keep this in the fridge with some crabbie cookies and worm castings. Dehydrated Mango, Watermelon, Pineapple, Papaya, Cranberries, Apple, Cucumber, Corn on Cob, Peas, Dried Beans, Popcorn & Quinoa.
Some things they do NOT like; meal worms (weird I know) some types of shrimp, crickets or grasshoppers- they don't touch them! Other than that, they eat almost anything and everything I give them.
I dehydrate the easy stuff, fruits and veggies, but I buy everything else from Delicouslycrabby and HermiesKitchen. I can truthfully say, I have close too at least one of everything, that each store sells and my crabs LOVE their food I am a crab food addict. I just can't stop buying it.

Re: What to feed my crabs?
Our crabs eat what we eat. All organic fresh fruits, veggies and nuts. Usually every time I eat something, I throw a little piece of what I'm having in their dish. The only food I buy specifically for them is dried shrimp and they love that. They usually always have oats or flax seed in there too. For some reason I cant get them to tear into any sort of leaves (I've tried romaine, spinach, radicchio, arugula). Nothing. However, I've pretty much experimented with everything and they will eat anything else I give them. Their favorite thing in the world could possibly be grapes & raisins (they are the first to go).
Beets! I love them and so do "Mitch" and "Gabe" and its an incredible colorant!!!! Incredible how fast they both gained a little bit of a more purple tint a day after eating them. It would be super awesome if someone would recreate my experiment and share their findings!!!
I'm shocked at the prices people are paying for food! A tub of organic oats from Whole Foods is $3 and some change. Best advice I can give is adopt a healthy lifestyle and you will rarely ever have to go out of your way to feed your hermies... You will feel better too!
