For my two small PP's the daily foods are: unsalted sunflower seeds, organic unsweetened coconut shreds, oats, cherios or cereal flakes and organic carrot shreds along with an organic hermit crab food mix that has the proper proteins, vegs and minerals along with a bit of the high protein food mix both that I got from the Crab Botanicals website : ) I alternate offering little bits of fresh apple, yellow/orange sweet pepper, raspberries, grapes, melon, pineapple, red cabbage shreds or sweet peas daily. I also sprinkle organic worm castings and powdered oyster shell supplements right on the substrate in the same corner of their crabitat where they will hang out and pick at it until they are satisfied . I have tried other foods like a variety of lettuces, dandelions flowers and greens, clover flowers and leaves, albacore tuna, fresh shrimp and other baked fish but these are not what they seem to eat. I also have tried Crab Cakes Pellets, but they don't eat them either.

For today I am giving the guys dried apple leaves and dried day lilies (not in the picture are dried irises. Everything I have read says they are toxic to basically every animal.)

Currently in my crabs dishes are fresh watermelon, dried shrimp, shred coconut, nuts, organic peanut butter and honey, and dried berries/apples. :)

Oh my gosh. I gave my guys a crawfish and they are loving it! I have not seen them go to town like this before. They are really cheap so it looks like I have a good inexpensive protein source for them.

So last night's food was a success. It actually surprised me with how much they ate! They've been hitting the food dishes hard lately, more than ever. They got brine shrimp, king crab leg, a pinch of hcp basic diet, parsley, pansey flowers, some tutti frutti popcorn that I sprinkled with color boost, coconut, carrot leaves, and sunflower seeds. Judging by the amount they have dragged across the tank, I'd say they where happy! Apparently me cleaning the sand meant it was time to "decorate" again.

Homemade food mixes!

Post by DinoJax » Sun Jul 24, 2016 4:03 pm

I just finished my food stock for a while! Homemade dehydrated fruits and veggies mix. And different grains, seeds and nuts. I make up three different mixes I cycle through so my crabbies get variety! I also add dried seafood and other proteins and powders to the foods.

The recipe notes are a really good idea, @DinoJax! Guess I'm too lazy to have more than one base mix to which pinches of other items are added on a rotating basis. As there are only two crabs up right now (and neither is interested in food at the moment...I'm shocked!), I have time to work on some new mixes and may "borrow" your combination ideas.

Sesame seeds : ) this is a new offering for my PP's and I think they like them because there's no more in the food dish! I have some plain albacore tuna fish I am going to add to their dish tonight, and I am hoping they will like that also.

Borrow away! These are even different than the first mixes I had. I'm rather OCD so I label everything. Lol. I figure I don't like eating the same thing so I'd cycle for them. Not that one mix doesn't have a lot to choose from. But it mostly reminds me not to give too much of one thing for a better variable diet.

This looks amazing! I've started drying food at home (good use for that dehydrator I got at a garage sale and left sitting in the box for the last three years, lol), I might need to try making a mix soon. :)

If it's a day when we're home and I'm prepping food for the family, I just set aside scraps all day and find that I have a decent meal collected for the crabs by evening. :)

Last night the hermies got an unseasoned version of our Southern dinner: catfish dredged in cornmeal and lightly cooked, rice, and I forgot to pull out a red bean before I seasoned them so no beans for them! To this I added veggies from my second dehydrating experiment, okra (they make a tasty crunchy human snack!) and red and yellow peppers. For dessert, fruit scraps from throughout the day (peach, mango, and an apple core), and one of Wode's honey peanut macaroons. This morning the largest chunk of macaroon has gone missing, LOL.

I usually mash or crumble part of the larger pieces of food for the tinys or crabs who prefer crushed/powdered bits. The broken up fish got eaten, the larger chunked got flipped! Rice was most popular, and the apple core was unusually well picked over (I put one in almost every other day so I figured they were bored with apple).

My 4 pp's enjoyed watermelon, zucchini and a few shreds of baked chicken for their fresh foods last night, and most of it is gone this morning : )
