I change it daily or every other day depending on what it is (some things spoil over night or mold and I put in fresh) but I always have a dishes of different foods in there at all times. I've been under the impression that my four crabs eat at different times of the day/ night so I thought I was supposed to keep food in there at all times. My guys never all run to their food. I offer all types of options but never really see them all come out and go to the food. I guess my question is how many of you have feeding times and how many have food available at all times in their crabitats?

I put in main diets around 6 pm then leave them be until around 6 pm next night (just toss and serve something different). I also have a few that eat during the day instead of night.... I always offer calcium, protein, leaf litter/bark. These get replaced as needed (usually 2-3 weeks) except for protein which is every 4-5 days. Hope that helps

Yes, that does help! Thank you

I wish I could find a place to get leaf litter and bark. I know I need it in my tank, but we don't have many trees in our yard and we get our lawn treated. We have a national forest park behind our house and beyond our fence buts up to the path that runs through it at the back of our property and it is, of course, filled with every tree and bush that grows in this area. But I don't know what the trees are and I am afraid I will pick up the wrong leaves, wrong wood , or introduce some kind of pest not knowing. And of course the forest is not treated with chemicals. But our community is built around a golf course so it is treated and 99% of our neighbors treat their lawns. Does anyone know where I can purchase safe leaf litter and wood?

No question is ever dumb

I replace my food in the afternoon, and leave it there until the next afternoon. I have a few diurnal crabs, which is why I do that. I switch my foods every day. I always have leaf litter, calcium sources, moss, and bark available though.
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

Today's breakfast is an organic rolled oats, almonds, and chia seed cereal mixed with clover honey and peanut butter. A side fruit salad of some raspberry and half a blueberry have gone unnoticed so far. A dried cricket and a dried mealworm is given for protein, also untouched. The meal might have been messier than i thought, as Snappy now had oats amd honey stuck to her shell. Oh well [WINKING FACE]

I offer tons of variety, but last night went back to the basics: fresh diced apple, mysis shrimp, cricket/mealworm blend and crushed oyster shells. They always eat that.
Offered in the past few weeks:
Diced cucumber (picked around, didn't eat)
Diced grapes (ate 1 of 3 times),
Bananas (didn't eat)
Red bell pepper (didn't eat)
Avocado (didn't eat)
Egg shell with raw albumin (definitely didn't eat any shell)
Scrambled eggs (always eat)
Seaweed (rarely eat)
Raw organic honey (never eat)
Tomato (didn't eat)
Strawberry/tops (don't eat)
Diced carrots (don't eat)
Crushed walnuts (rarely eat)
Dried coconut (can't tell if they eat it, it's mixed up and dirty, but quantity doesn't seem to go down)
Ground flax seed (don't eat)
Mineral powder (usually eat)
I have 3 jumbo and 1 large. They are totally nocturnal except one when she has recently molted who comes out to eat at 9/10 pm. So I never see them, but the moss level is torn up most nights, new tunnels and most of the food eaten as long as it's apples and protein!
How important is variety?

It sounds like you maybe need more protein. Try and provide more( krill, bloodworms, dried insects, chicken, and fried beef litter is always a favorite.)

They get mysis shrimp, fresh shrimp, HCP surf and turf (crickets/shrimp/mealworms), and/or eggs every day (usually two proteins).
They just don't seem to like anything other than protein, apples and mineral/calcium powder. No greens, no to most other fruits, veggies, nuts or grains.

Oh gotcha. They probably eat little bits here and there.

They each so little that they probably do eat it and you don't realize. Have you tried grinding the protein up? Try plankton, crab, lobster, real shrimp- my crabbies go BONKERS for those proteins
