Herring. They'll probably just get the head of one of them when they thaw out enough to cut.

Wolf - those herring are beautiful! Even the frozen fish here doesn't look that good. The bummers of living too far from the ocean.

I found some wild roses today and put some petals in the tank for the first time. Little crabbies LOVE them! I gave the petals a good rinse with the dechlor spray, but was I supposed to do anything else to them? Freeze, dry? I'm assuming fresh off the plant is fine.

Fresh is their fav, but you can dry them, also. I've never frozen them before, though. For next time, they also love the pollen and ovary part of the rose flower, too.

Re: What's on today's menu & recipe sharing
I made this mix up, and it's what I call "The Outdoors Mix". It's simple, and if you live in the country, the majority of these things can be found right outside in your yard! It's a great mix if it become late and you somehow forget to feed the crabs or don't have time, just grab the bag and sprinkle some in a dish! Here goes...
The Outdoors Mix
Ingredients:
*Rose petals (from my rose bush)
*Fresh Oak Tree Leaves
*Fresh Silver Maple Tree Leaves
*Grass
*Raspberry Bush Leaves
*Dried Calendula and Chamomile flowers purchased from http://www.herbco.com
(You could also add some Oak Tree Bark, I think it would be a nice touch. I was in a hurry when I made this, so I didn't have the time to get the bark off.)
I brought all these things in, put them in a strainer, and rinsed them off. I let them dry, and then threw all the contents in the blender turned it on. I had to stick a big plastic ladle in to mix it around since the ingredients would be on the sides, but it turned into a nice mix. Leave it spread out on a paper towel to dry out overnight, and then put it in a sandwich baggie in the morning. My crabs loved it with some shrimp or eggshells sprinkled in, but I don't recommend keeping them in the bag, because they could go bad. My crabs love this mix every time I feed them it, and I see at least everyone take a trip to the food bowl.
Thanks for reading! Just thought I'd share my recipe! I'm also going to blog it too, just incase you don't read this.

Re: What's on today's menu & recipe sharing
i make "crab popsicles" every now and then, they love them! Spcecially my E's!
I simply get all of the following and put them in the blender...
fresh coconut milk
fresh coconut
mango
strawberries
banana
apple
maple leaves
carrot
red bell pepper
bone marrow
shrimp tails
freeze dried crickets
romaine lettuce
seaweed
spirulina powder
cuttle bone
worm castings
liquify in the blender then pour into ice cube trays (i use the cubes made for water bottles, the ice comes out in a tube like shape about 4 inches long 1/2 inch wide. these make it easier to cut pieces for partial treats), once frozen add to the dish and place in the tat.
If you put it in the tat before any of them come out it helps thaw it out quicker so it's warmed up a bit once they do come out...my E's don't seem to mind eating it frozen, crazy crabs!

Re: What's on today's menu & recipe sharing
notice you are all feeding cuttlebone, I just keep a loonie sized piece stuck in the sand for them to have whenever they'd like. It never comes out of the tank. Is this okay, or should I crush it up and put it in their food dish every night?
Also, where do you guys find spirulina powder?

Do all of your crabs like the meal worms? I have 2 PPs and 1 E and they didnt take to the mealies at allRockyGurly wrote:I got my hands on some maple bark and leaves and they had a blast with them
So, maple goodies, dried peppers, strawberry and pineapple, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, algae powder, spirinula powder and some calcium stuff and of course their nightly bowl of mealworms (which they clean out every night)

I've seen all my PPs, violas and strawberry destroy mealies, are the ones you're serving live? Mine done like freeze dried ones for some reasonHermitHoarder wrote: Do all of your crabs like the meal worms? I have 2 PPs and 1 E and they didnt take to the mealies at all
They might just not need te extra protien, remember, I have 23 crabs, so I can really tell when foods been eaten plus there's a little more competition for protien, whereas your 3 crabbies have plenty to go around (mine do to, they just get greedy)

I have only tried twice, and I had live ones that I drowned in hot water... Im scared to put them in live cause if they escape I will be totally creeped out Maybe I'll try a deeper ceramic bowl like you have and see how they like them.
