My hands are stained yellow!

Post by KellyCrabbieLove » Mon May 04, 2015 2:22 pm

I took my daughters out to our yard and we picked dandelions. Then my 6 yr old and I got them into food dehydrator. I snipped the heads off and she sat them on the trays.

Don't forget the leaves! My crabbies love them. :) My boys used to help pick too but now it's mostly my youngest willing to go out and pick dandelion and clover with me.

I'm jealous! My hubby spread weed killer on our yard so I don't have access to any dandelions or other potential yummies. What a jerk.

Wode, I love how you have so many crabs that every time you post a pic of them eating it looks like a massive feeding frenzy. Haha!

I'm hoping to get out to my mom's next weekend, and there's always tons of dandelion in the yard. Can't wait!

Tomorrow's plan is to grab the leaves and clover

How long do you think it will take for everything to dry completely? The dandelion heads seem to be drying well.

Longer than you think - it can take several days for the center of the flowers to dry completely. First year I did them they molded over after a week in the bags because I didn't leave them on the dehydrator long enough and even though I thought the flower heads were dry there was still moisture in the very middle. (Same thing happened with marigolds and rose of sharon.... :anon: ) Now I go for a minimum of 48 hours on low for thicker flowers, or I pull them apart first. And take the dehydrator outside before taking them off - the amount of pollen that will drift off the dandelions once they are good and dry can cause serious trouble for anyone allergic. I made my kitchen uninhabitable for a couple of days because it got everywhere...

Leaves go much faster, but stems can take more than a day and they dry unevenly, so the batch has to be checked closely. Roots, too.
