Making a proper menu for my PPs - help?

Post by Reptilian Feline » Tue Jun 09, 2015 9:05 am

So... I've been over the list of safe food, and the one ofer unsafe... and it doesn't really help that much... well, I'll explain.
I feel like a sudden parent who with the kids got a list of safe food, and has worked through broccoli (kids didn't like it) and spinach (kids didn't eat that either) and ended up with ice cream (kids loved it) since I noticed the little buggers semed to like it, so that's what I feed them (hypothetical kids of course). Ice cream isn't good food in the long run, but the list doesn't say so.

As a new PP "parent" I need help to put together a healthy menu. What should they have every day? What is a treat for once a week? Once a month? What to give them throughout the week (monday this, tuesday that etc.)?

I have given them turtle pellets (ReptiCal that my turtle doesn't want to eat), but they weren't overly excited about it. The same goes for Giant African Land Snail (GALS) egg and babies. They ate some but didn't seem to like it.
I tried dried (from my own culture) crickets, but they mostly just dragged them around.
I tried dried up stick insects (T. sp. aurora) from my own breeding (some babies never make it past the first molt) and they seemed more interested in them, but grew tired of them pretty easily.
I tried tiny pieces of chicken heart (my turtle loves that) and that was gone the next day.
I tried a frozen fish food made of spinach and ox heart (that my turtle doesn't want to eat) and they always finish that.
I tried shredded coconut (the kind used for baking) and at first they loved it, but they seem to grow tired of it.
I tried honey and calcium powder (we give the calcium to our GALS) and they had some, and most got finished over the week, but I don't think they loved it.
They sometimes get small pieces of fruit (the same we give our GALS) and that usually gets eaten.
They love pulling pieces off of the oak bark ramp, so much so, that I went out and picked up more that I will heat in the oven.
They have a piece of sepia/cuttlebone and that is now nice and rounded, so they do nibble on it.

I don't have easy access to hermit crab commersial food, so I'd rather go with things I can get in the grocery store or the aquarium shop (frozen fish food section). Unless there are some Hikari pond sticks you'd recommend.

So, please, hermit crab (especially PP) "parents", help me put together a healthy and varied diet for my PPs :notworthy:

Eggs! All crabs love raw albumin served in a half-eggshell so offer them some next time you're cooking eggs. Hardboiled egg bits with yolk are always a hit and a good source of protein. Keep your eggshells (cleaned in very hot water and dried) to use as serving bowls for things like honey or bits of cooked, unseasoned meat/fish/eggs -- nice and disposable and a good source of calcium as they'll pick away at the shells :D .

I've made a dry mix that my crabs really enjoy so it's in the crabitat 24/7. The mix is made from Fluker's Aquatic Turtle Medley (freeze-dried mealworms, shrimp, crickets), Wardley's Hermit Crab Dried Shrimp, cuttlebone and eggshells: the ingredients are ground down to a "chunky" powder with a mortar and pestle. The mix keeps very well so I only make a new batch every few months. When serving, I'll usually add a little something extra such as 10-grain cereal, chia seeds, crushed sesame or flax seeds or crushed nuts.

I have a mix I make and dehydrate. Apples, bananas, lots of strawberries(my crabs love then fresh or dried), carrot, beet, coconut, pineapple and blueberries. I have this always available and change as needed. Every few days I put a fresh salad in of kale, dandelion leaves and lettuce as well as some slivers of fresh lox. I put full eggshells in with their food that they love to nibble. Then I have a variety of dried seafood.
