Successful treats!

Post by Happy Crabbies » Mon Dec 28, 2015 11:09 pm

Wow! So today I made a mixture of organic honey and organic pumpkin puree and they LOVED it! I only got these three guys yesterday, but they're mowing down on this stuff, when they wouldn't touch the blackberries and carrots from last night. I'm so excited I already found something they enjoy.
What are some things yours go crazy for?

So far mine go nuts over earthworm castings. It's one of the things I have in the tank 24/7 in the supplements dish & they really go through it. I just ordered a 1lb bag on Amazon because I'm close to running out and I'm afraid they'll murder me in the night if I do. Other than that, they really like freeze-dried mealworms and crickets, whitefish, krill, an 8-grain mix I bought from the store (Red Mill brand or something, I think?), powdered corn....They also like eggshells. I gave them dried berries night before last from a store-bought bag & there's no sign of them now, I'm rather surprised! That's all I can think of for right now though I'm sure I'm forgetting something!

Also just in case you don't already know - please make sure your crabbies have an animal protein and calcium every night. They need access to both at all times to make sure they get plenty of protein and calcium. Protein so they won't go after other crabs and calcium because it's important for molting.

Wow thats crazy! I do know about the protein and calcium, I've been crabbing for almost 6 years but this is my first experience making my own "treats" I guess you could call them? I'm waiting until we eat enough eggs that I can throw the shells into a processor and grind them up and just leave them in the tank. Ive heard a few people do that.
Do you know if they enjoy live meal worms? I have them on hand always because I have fire belly toads and maybe they would like those?
Also, can they eat raw meat? I think this sounds like a stupid question but I have never tried it and never seen anything about it.

Ah, sorry for the unnecessary advice then! I'm glad they liked your new treat so well, that's always a great feeling! :D

I think they would like live mealworms, I feel like I've seen people mention giving them before. I don't know how quickly they would catch the worms though, so you may end up with a worm or two living in the tank. I know they can & will hunt isopods, so mealworms probably wouldn't be too far off.

And yup, raw meat is fine! :)

I tried isopods when I first started crabbing and they breed like crazy! I probably wouldnt try them again, just because they got so out of hand last time
Thanks for your help!

I know they go nuts for the mealworm pupae. When my colony gets too big the crabs get those because they can't run away and hide.
