Are my supplies safe?

Post by PixelPlex22 » Sat Jan 09, 2016 3:23 pm

Can someone check my Hermit Crab supplies for dangerous ingredients? I use Flukers Hermit Crab Premium Pellet diet and Flukers Buffet Blend with Premium pellets and Mealworms and River Shrimp. I also use Zoo-Meds Hermit crab salt water/drinking water products.
Thanks

I don't know about the food; I can't find anything I know of dangerous in it, but it has a lot of unfamiliar ingredients and is not on the safe food list. Most crabbers recommend a complete or mostly fresh food/non-commercial diet for the crabs. However, there are commercial foods that are safe. The mealworms and river shrimp that you have are safe, and I feed something similar, but I don't know about the other two.

The water dechlorinator is safe. The saltwater, however, is not. It doesn't provide everything the crabs need in the salt water. Most recommend "Instant Ocean" salt. You can find it at the pet store.

I wouldn't use any of it. The first thing that gets tossed when I adopt new crabs are the pellets.
Check out the safe food list linked above and you will find that you can feed the crabs for next to nothing by picking bits off when prepping meals. Just take some scraps before seasoning, keep eggshells, etc.
For water you want marine grade salt mix such as Instant Ocean. There are other brands but this is the most commonly used, probably because it is easy to find.
SeaChem Prime and Kordon Amquel Plus are good dechlorinators. The Prime only takes 2 drops or so a gallon, and one small bottle lasts a long time. I have not had to replace mine in 2 years and I have large pools in my tanks.

Be sure to read the guides linked above, if you can return the items and exchange them that would be good. Unfortunately they are just not really good for the crabs.

I'm happy to say that I've ordered Hermit crab patch food and instant ocean sea salt. As far as I can tell hermit crab patch food has no preservatives and no "unnatural" ingredients. Also instant ocean was recommend by JulesRolyCrab.
