Treats and Stuff?
Hey there, soooo I was wondering if anyone here has any good recipes to make little snacks and stuff for hermit crabs, like cookies or any other types of treats or food mixes that my children might enjoy. If you do please feel free to tell me and maybe leave the recipe? I'd love to try some new stuff out!

To be safe for your kids to eat that you can also feed the crabs I'd suggest granola with different fruits, chai seeds, raisins with just oats and honey.

I have a food dehydrater that I use to make banana chips, apple chips, kale chips ect.

So with things like fruits, honey & oats...any particular way to prepare them? I've seen tons of suggestions for dehydrated fruits, but I wouldn't want to give him too much extra sugars!

We always have whole rolled oats in the pantry. I've served them dry just as they are; pulsed into a coarse powder with a coffee grinder; and cooked. I can't tell if they eat the dry oats, but I do see footprints in the cooked! Our favorite way to cook oatmeal is in the microwave: 1 cup water, 1 cup coconut milk, 1 cup oats for five minutes on high (in a very large glass mixing bowl covered with a paper towel so it doesn't boil over!). Then we mash up a ripe banana and mix it in as a sweetener (no sugar). I save a spoonful for the crabs and we eat the rest! My son adds cranberries to his, I sprinkle mine with chopped walnuts, sometimes the crabs get both of those, too.Giner13 wrote:So with things like fruits, honey & oats...any particular way to prepare them?

When I used to eat a lot healthier, I made oatmeal "breakfast cookies", which were basically oats, dried fruit and nuts held together by mashed banana and coconut oil, then pressed into a cookie cutter and baked. They were so good! I bet something like that would work for hermit crabs, just check all the ingredients to make sure they are safe. Here's one that looks a lot like the one I used to make (leave out the vanilla, since vanillin is on the unsafe/unpopular food list): http://kumquatblog.com/2012/03/blueberr ... okies.html. I'd probably leave out the salt, too, no reason for it. If you search for "breakfast cookies", you can find lots of these kinds of recipes. I don't think I'd go through this much trouble for the crabs (well, maybe, I did used to bake dog cookies!), but I would certainly make myself a batch of these and the crabs would be the beneficiaries, LOL.
