On Pesticides & Such

I'm very careful not to feed my crabs anything that might have pesticides, fertilizers, or other kinds of chemicals like that. I generally avoid store-bought produce for this reason. Though I'm curious to know if there's a good answer behind how one can avoid such chemicals without avoiding the foods themselves.
Cutting the skin away, or simply taking morsels cut from within the middle of the fruit/vegetable/whatever seem like possible workarounds. However, I've usually been too cautious to try, and I've never come across an answer more substantive than intuition and guesses. Is there any science on this subject?
