Homemade Crab Food Recipe? (that last for weeks/months)
Hello,
I've been buying a very good perservative free store bought hermit crab food for the past 10 years. However, the company just changed their formula and it now contains food dyes and perservatives I'm so disheartened.
I do not have the means to mix up a new food for them everyday. I like the idea of making them a batch of crushed up dried food (dye free, perservative free, and organic) and it lasting in a sealed container for several weeks (months even better).
Does anyone have a good recipe that I can mix up for my crabbies that provides all the nutrition they need and last for a long time if stored properaly?
Thanks!

If you are looking for just a general mix of foods that will cover their all around nutritional bases, I would suggest some variation of this.
(Everything should be pesticide free)
Oats
Crushed eggshells
Freeze dried shrimp
Dried crickets
Dehydrated pieces of unseasoned/unbrined chicken or beef
Freeze dried mussels
Seaweed sheets
Oak leaves or other crab safe leaf litter
Dehydrated fruit such as strawberries, apples, or other crab safe dried fruit-with no added sugars
Dehydrated vegetables
Dried beans
Millet
Flax seed meal
Unsalted raw nuts such as pecans, almonds, walnuts
Worm castings
Spirulina
Bee pollen
Powdered peanut butter (with nothing but peanuts as the ingredient)
Crab safe dried flowers (organically grown with no fertilizers or pesticides)
Sorghum sticks
Just make sure you have a decent mix of proteins, veg/fruit, leaf litter, and calcium sources. The greater the variety, the better the mix will be if you intend on this being their staple diet.

So just mix all of those ingredients together and store in a large container in the fridge? Or cupboard?

No refrigeration necessary if all the items are dried or dehydrated.HermiesIsMine wrote:So just mix all of those ingredients together and store in a large container in the fridge? Or cupboard?

I'm so glad I found this post and your comment haha. I've been buying food from the HermitCrabPatch (which has been nice. almost through their 3rd little baggie of food since december or so) but I've been recently wanting to actually make their food. Like the OP, I would like to be able to make something and have it last for a while since that is what I'm so used to so your comment was VERY helpful. But when (I know it'll happen eventually) I decide that I want to start making fresh food for them daily(ish), what are some simple meals that you think may be popular? I've always wanted to see my little buddies absolutely DESTROY a meal ever since reading through some of the comments of the "What's on today's menu & recipe sharing" postsoilentgringa wrote:No refrigeration necessary if all the items are dried or dehydrated.HermiesIsMine wrote:So just mix all of those ingredients together and store in a large container in the fridge?
