HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Is there a list of safe flowers that crabs can eat? I have read the safe food list & saw a few but are there anymore they can eat? Thank you.

Be sure to check the Unsafe/Unpopular Foods list, too, as there are quite a number of common flowers/leaves listed that could be potentially toxic to hermit crabs. The only flowers my crabs have had are sunflower, white clover and lilac, all dried, that I ordered from Alaska Hermit Crab.

An issue with even safe flowers, as with trees/leaves, is have they been treated with any type of pesticide? Unless these are plants you've raised yourself organically, or are from someone's organic garden, it's hard to be sure even "safe" plants are safe.

Crabinski, good to know. Thank you so much. So basically, if we have grown them from seed ourselves or ordered dried organic flowers for them, that is the only safe way to feed flowers. I had been giving them an occasional petunia, impatience, & or daisy. Glad I haven't done too much.

If any sort of fertilizers other than organic (worm castings, bone meal,etc.) have been used or any commercial plant food (miracle gro), the flowers cannot be fed to crabs. Any pesticides (organic or inorganic) would render them unsafe as well.

I won't be risking feeding them anymore of the flowers here. I just put in an order to Alaska hermit crab. I just hope I haven't harmed them in any way.

No problem There are plenty of good options. You can spend as much or as little as you want on feeding them and still have a great variety of food.

"Wild-harvested" and "wild-crafted" are good terms to see when shopping for flowers for hermit crab food.
