HCA: Hermit Crab Association

My cousin raises his own nightcrawler worms for fishing. If I were to get worm castings off of him what should I look for and/or ask him about? Do I need to do anything other than just take from his worm tub and place with my Crabs? What about storing them? Can I stick a container of them in the freezer for a ready supply. Any and all input would be appreciated.

you would need to know how they are being kept and what they are eating. im assuming it would be fine to freeze them or put them in an air tight container.

Just make sure its 100% organic. You don't want to be feeding your crabs castings from worms that were not fed only organic foods.

If you want to be sure about the worm castings, worms are actually pretty easy to keep. For a while, I had a group in an old Folgers coffee can on our counter. The castings would be fresh and you would know exactly what is in them. But you don't necessarily need or want another living thing to care for, so to address your original quesion, the castings keep for months in the refrigerator (although I'm not sure of the nutrient depreciation), and I'm certain you could freeze them as well. When we buy live worms for fishing, we store them in a container in the crisper (bottom drawer) of our refrigerator. I would say probably use an opaque and airtight container for just the castings, and make sure to check that it's maintaining its moisture every once in a while.
