Color Enhancing Foods???

Post by HeyItsEggs » Sun Feb 12, 2017 12:07 pm

Hello My Friends!
I was just wondering something... Which foods will enhance and deepen the color of hermit crabs? I really love the deep colored hermits!

Thanks!
They absolutely love carrots. (Or it was Mal eating them all before she went down to molt  )
But she wouldn't have ate them before going down if she didn't like them right?

I think tannin is color enhancing too. My babies are rich in color. I give a lot of oak leaves, almond leaves, oak bark. They also munch on the wood in their tank. Other things I feed that have color to them are beets, strawberries, cherries, blueberries, raisins, carrots, plums, apple, tomatoes, red bell peppers, shrimp, krill, tuna, salmon, marigold flowers, rose petals, hibiscus, passionflowers. Those are my color enhancing foods. I'm tired. there are probably more I feed. LOL

Dulse - red seaweed - is good. You can get it at health food & bulk stores.

Edit - have you checked out this link from the food pages?

I dried burning bush leaves from my yard. They enhance my crab's purple coloring.

Though carotene is great, another great one is anything rich in astaxanthin. Crawfish, kind crab, shrimp, algae, krill, and spirulina are all excellent sources of it. Really, having a well rounded diet full of protein, calcium, beta-corotene, and astaxanthin are a sure way to end up with some gorgeous colored crabs. Carrots, bell peppers, and beets are also very popular "color boosting" foods. The bigger the variety the better, as they will pick and choose what they need! :)

I order the color booster from hermies kitchen. All my crabs have a deep red almost purple color. Here's my big guy.

I know THCP sells a color enhancing blend, however I've never used it, so I can't really tell you how well it works.

They might sell food that is organic, but I can guarantee you that the company is not USDA Certified Organic. ;)
