Can I feed this to my crabs?

Post by Puoyo » Tue Aug 01, 2017 10:15 am

I found this in my kitchen and I was wondering if I can give it to them
It has peaches, pears, water, corn syrup, grapes, pineapple, cherries, Carmine and sugarImage

I wouldn't because corn syrup is straight sugar, and they should have limited sugar.

Sorry, correct me if i am wrong but where does it mention to provide limited sugar? Sugars are important for respiration, so they would be a good food group to include.

I watch how much sugar I give mine as well. Fruit is already loaded with it, so they shouldn't need more. As a treat it wouldn't hurt, but I wouldn't suggest making it a regular meal.

Something that doesn't get talked about with hermits - but really should - is overeating. Captive animals in general are always at high risk of being overfed, which leads to a myriad of health issues. With other arthropods, overfeeding causes explosive growth that can actually kill them by causing them to molt too quickly. Given how picky hermits can be it's probably not a top concern, but it's always been something I've kept in mind and have always watched the amount of excess sugars and fats just in case. It's been said that the top killer of fish for instance is fatty liver disease, which comes from eating too much and too much data and calories and sugars, and the same can be done to cats and dogs and reptiles.
