Post by CrabDad » Thu Dec 17, 2020 4:47 pm

So we will be traveling for the week between Christmas and New Years... How can I feed the crabs during that time? Dogs and cats going with us, fish have an auto feeder, crabs?? Any thoughts?

Just fill up the water bowls, and leave a good supply of dried foods. The food will be fuzzy with mold by the time you get back, but that's fine. Prior to covid, I left my crabs for a week at a time, three or four times a year, without any issues.

Thanks! Any suggestions on dried foods? I have seen someone recently suggested dry cat food? I have some of the freeze dried crickets but they never seem to be interested in them...

I have purchased some dried foods from Hermit Crab Patch and Canadian Chubby Crab, and have dried some leaves, veggies, and flowers from my garden.
There are certain types of cat and dog food/ treats that are single ingredient, which would work. You can also leave cuttle bone and egg shells for calcium. And dried shrimp is available in the turtle section.

I always had good luck putting some bird seed sticks (kind of like granola bars) in my tank for them on vacations in the past. I broke them into pieces and they really enjoyed them. Plus it's protein-packed and doesn't spoil easily.
