HCA: Hermit Crab Association

i saw this on amazon and it’s supposed to be an organic plant fertilizer i believe and i think it’s just crushed crab and lobster shell is this okay for my crabs to eat?

That's the same exact brand we use for our crabs! It is listed as a fertilizer the same way greensand, worm castings and chicken poop are.
If one of these companies would decide to offer the same product as a pet food it would require more permits and regulations then a half pound would probably cost $15.50!

do you guys mostly buy foods like that off of amazon?
it’s so easy to buy these things off of etsy but but in the long run it’s just cheaper to but things myself lol
but i like to buy the stores mixes for my crabs from a bunch of the etsy shops

I usually get bulk stuff like that off of Amazon. However, I look for crabby food at every store I go to lol. So sometimes I find good deals at grocery stores, Big Lots, Ollie's, etc.

Every single shopping trip for us turns into a crab food run! We started to buy a lot of our flowers and herbs from a health food store that offered them per weight. It's a lot cheaper than online if you can find a place local. We also dehydrate a lot of fruits we buy ourselves too! We purchase just about all of our proteins and mixes from Etsy. There are definitely a lot more choices for Crab foods online now compared to three years ago!

Although this list isn't a full list it is a great start to hunting down safe foods. This is an older list based off I believe tortoises and what previous crab keepers have found crabs seem to like.

There is also an unsafe and unpopular list. Once again it's based off lists generated many years ago and could use an upgrade too.

i would love to dehydrate foods for my crabs bc they like that way better than fresh foods
do you have a dehydrator ? or is there another way?

We bought a dehydrator off Craig's List about two years ago for like $40! It came with several extra trays and liners too! To buy everything new it would have probably been close to $150! I think they are one of those things everyone plans to use then just take up space in a closet. Then people unload them cheap to get rid of them. I would say if you want one check out the FB marketplace and other sites too. Then check out that model on Amazon for the price new and reviews. I have seen some people selling dehydrators for around $25 and up.

I tried to dehydrate using an oven, but ended up burning everything. I would think that an oven would also cost a lot more to run compared to a dehydrator too.
