Walnut bark

Post by Anondotco » Sat Apr 15, 2023 7:33 pm

They recently cut down a walnut tree in my yard, so I salvaged a large piece of bark and smoked it it a high temp to kill off any and all passengers.
Is this wood safe for my crabitat?
Sincerely yours 😊.

Walnut contains something called juglone, which is a pretty strong natural chemical that can affect insects, mammals and plants. Some insects and animals are immune to the affects, but there hasn't been a good trial done to know if hermit crabs are among them. (We know the nut meat is safe, but it doesn't contain the chemical.) Other parts of the tree have much higher concentrations, so for now should be avoided for safety.
