Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus)

Post by Kilimanjaro » Wed Aug 06, 2008 10:24 pm

Hi!

I'm pretty sure I have "Rose of Sharon" (Hibiscus syriacus) growing in my backyard. It's been there since we moved!

If this plant is Rosasharn (as the Joad's daughter was named in The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck), is it crab edible?

I know hibiscus is okay for crabs, but is it only the tropical, not deciduous variety? :?:

I've tried putting in the blossoms before, but never got any real response. I didn't do an actual trial or anything though.

There's a picture of a crab eating a rose of sharon blossom on the front page of hermit crab cuisine. I've only had mine nibble, never devoured.

I've been offering a different flower every night, altering from white to pink, and there have been no takers. :|

I put a pink rose of sharon blossom in the food dish a couple of weeks ago. The only one of my clan to nibble on it was my small PP pinky.
