Unless something chemical-y has spilled in it, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Just clean it and get it going!

You can use a diluted vinegar solution to wipe it down. That's what most suggest. The vinegar is not harmful to the crabs. Just make sure you rinse real good.

Yeah. I figure rinse it with hot water several times and it'll be good. Thanks!

Or a hose if you are above freezing.

When I got my new tank I used dechlorinated water and vinegar to clean mine :)

Ditto here with the vinegar! I got our 55g tank free from a colleague and it had been in her garage for decades. I bought a couple of jugs of white vinegar and soaked it with some water from the hose to dilute it - I did this about 2-3 times over days because of all of the calcium build up on the glass. But it got it good and clean! Then left it out to dry in the sun:)

If no vinegar, lemons can work too as well - and give it a nice smell too! Both vinegar and lemons also great for getting rid of mineral deposits as well!

I have a fear of used tanks especially those that previously housed fresh water fish, so I only buy new tanks. I give them a rinse with regular tap water to remove any dust and dry with a towel.

Lots of people successfully use used tanks, but not me. It's my hangup. I realize that yours, OP, previously housed your hermit crabs, so you are probably good.

I used lemons on my 29 after the vinegar did not get the hard water stains off. The lemons got off most of it.
