No. I spray mine with FW (I believe some crabbers use MSW but I think that is a personal choice) until it reaches sand castle consistency . Main thing when spraying with MSW is to keep in mind that although the water will eventually evaporate, the salt will not.

Sand question

Post by GotButterflies » Sat Feb 04, 2017 1:47 pm

The all purpose sand is a clay based sand. It kind of is sand castle consistency, but I used marine salt water to make mine perfect. Their play sand is loose, and you would need to add marine salt water to it as well.

HCA recommends marine salt water becomes it helps keep bacteria blooms from happening. It also mimics the beach. Some crabbers use dechlorinated fresh water instead.

Edit: spraying daily to keep moist you would use dechlorinated fresh water like Kermie mentioned

Also, if you mix it 5 parts sand to 1 part eco earth that helps keep it moist as well

That's what I have been using for a few years now. I pour a little in and then wet it down pretty good and keep doing that. I use fresh water for that. I also mix in layers of coconut soil soaked in saltwater. It might not be the best but it stays humid, decent tunnels, and they molt good in it. And for less then $5.00 for a 50 pound bag at home depot its hard to beat.
