How often do you change your enclosure?

This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

How often do you change your enclosure?

Post by Drake X. Bit » Mon Feb 13, 2017 10:17 am

I like to take my Hermies out once a week and move their environment around and introduce new climbing toys. How often do you do this? It's basically the highlight of my week.

Totally depends on how bad everything has been trashed. :)

I'm hands off with my crabbies. I only switch out the water once a week (I have 5 quart bowls with air stones), switch out food daily. I don't move big things around. I add things here and there, like leaves, moss, but that's it. My hermits stay active with the hamster wheels. ;)

Speaking of hamster wheels.... Last night, one of mine was under it laying belly side up just walking away but going nowhere. After about 30-45 mins of doing this, he finally decided to get in it. I was tickled to death!! It's the first use I've seen since its been in there. (Little over week now.) I wish I recorded it but I didn't want to turn on any lights and run/scare him off. I've seen videos of them in it walking but not under it walking. It was the funniest thing!

Do you think it's bad to change their whole environment every week? Should I stop?

I think it's good to keep it interesting for them. I would keep some things the same though so they have some familiarity, but that's me

I typically keep the same water dishes, food dishes, and housing, but rearrange them in new areas, and add new toys. We recently chopped down a tree, so we have a ton of sticks and rocks waiting to be cleaned and used as climbing toys.

I would keep their housing in the same areas
Edit: that way they always know where to go to feel safe

I take the decor out of my tank maybe 1-2 times a year so I can stir up the substrate. Other than that, I don't change things around much at all.

I'm very hands off. I only remove the crabs when I'm doing the sub maintenance, otherwise I don't touch them at all ever.

I rearrange whenever I feel like it, or things get super trashed. I'd say it's probably about once a month. But I really don't think once a week will hurt them either. I think it's another one of those personal preference things. :)

Maybe every 6 months or so if I am churning the substrate. I'm very hands off with my crabs and don't disturb them unless I have to.
