New climbing net
For a new climbing net, that I picked up at the craft store... would you normally boil it? Thought I read that somewhere?
Also... getting new woods (grape wood, cholla wood, etc)... would that also be boiled? Saltwater boil?

Re: New climbing net
i can speak to the nets as i havent used them. how i would treat them would depend on the material its made of. for any woods i soak them in SW then bake them in the oven until they are dry.

Curious... why the SW soak? Is it to prevent mold later?Just Jay wrote:i can speak to the nets as i havent used them. how i would treat them would depend on the material its made of. for any woods i soak them in SW then bake them in the oven until they are dry.
How long do you soak for?
And, when you bake in the oven, what temp are you baking at, that won't burn it?

Re: New climbing net
Yes, most people use SW for mould inhibition. A good hour or so will do, however if you want to soak up to a day then it also would be fine. But an hour is enough IMO. Turn the temp to the lowest setting your oven offers, and bake for 30mins. After that, you should be good to go.
AS for the net, a dip in FW - to remove anything on it - followed by a good soak in SW. Leave to dry.

yep. mainly for mold prevention. i on the other hand soak until i dont see any more bubbles/its fully saturated. for baking i do it at 300 or so. i dont have a time as everything is different. i put whatever in the oven until its fully dry. somethings i will soak and bake twice. i do that mainly for woods and then dry grass netting i use. every tank is different so you can always play around with things and see what works best for you. another member mentioned baking at 450 with the door ajar. i changed to the 300 (or so) until dry since thats what works great for me.CharlesMTF wrote:Curious... why the SW soak? Re: New climbing net
It honestly just depends on how fast things mold in your tank. I have a high mold environment so i SW treat any and everything. Baking isn't 100% needed. I just use it to dry them off and another layer of protection.Dragonfreak wrote:I have been knitting hemp for climbing around the tank I boil it in fw... Should I be SW soaking and baking too??

Re: New climbing net
I don't bake or soak anything before I put it in my tank. I have 99% humidity. I only use authentic fish net though.
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

Fishing nets are made to be wet all the time and never fully dry. For materials that arent made for that purpose id recommend treating it so it doesnt mold. You dont have to but mold spores are nearly impossible to kill.GotButterflies wrote:I don't bake or soak anything before I put it in my tank. I have 99% humidity. Re: New climbing net
I use genuine used fishnet from someone on Etsy...... I boiled it in SW, because man it stunk! But according to everyone else in the house it made the entire house stink.

Re: New climbing net
I read somewhere in the forum that you could throw it in the washing machine, so I did! After putting it in a mesh laundry bag so it wouldn't tangle around the drum, and of course without soap. I think I did a hot cycle. Can't remember if I also did a saltwater soak, but I only air dry nets (bake almost everything else). Nets have been in the tank ten months, no issues.

That is what I did. Put it in the wash, hot water, and bleach. Then two thorough washes to makes sure the bleach was out, and then in the dryer in hot. Then, I also gave it the saltwater dip for little while (I think 30 minutes), and then let it air dry.
