Moss molding?

Post by jdauby09 » Thu May 18, 2017 7:21 pm

I added 2 moss pits to my tank last night and I went to check everything and my moss seems to be growing mold...what do I do? I soaked it in distilled water like the directions said and put it in 2 baskets hanging off of back wall...my hydrometer isn't working correctly so I am not sure what the humidity is but I know it's above 80% an my thermostat is set at 80...I turned my bubbler down...do I have to throw out all the moss or can I save it somehow?

Mold isn't harmful to the crabbies but it is to us. As far as handling it, I'll let another crabber chime in.

I have always had better results woth moss when I use salt water. The salt will help prevent mold.
When handling mold use gloves and a respirator. Mold is toxic to us so take care.

Could I save the moss by taking top layer off and re soaking it all in salt water?

Unless you have severe allergies or immune compromised, and depending on what kind of mold it is, mold isn't going to harm you.

Soaking the moss in salt water then wringing it out until it is just damp will help alleviate mold.

Mold is something that comes along with crabbing. It just happens.
