Trying to add substrate while crabs are buried

All 4 of my crabs apparently love to bury themselves. They come out during the night but I haven't seen all 4 out at the same time in at least a week. But, I have seen all 4 at some point, so I'm pretty sure they're not molting. I need to add substrate. Can I just add a cup or two at a time? They backfill their holes and dig themselves out every night. Can they dig out of an extra inch of substrate if I accidentally cover over them?

Yes. Just do not pack it down. I personally think it is safe adding 1 inch every 24 hours.

They came up through the additional substrate last night and reburied this morning. I just added the rest of the bag. I guess they'll make their way though that as well! <3

I added the rest of the bag and three have come up but not the 4th.... my most active. I've long suspected that she needed to molt. Did I finally provide the right conditions for her to molt.... or did I bury her alive?!!!
