Ive read multiple times that 3 months is the minimum amount of time it takes most plants to cycle out anything absorbed from old soil. You don't have to go through multiple generations of cuttings, just root a few cuttings in a pot of home-made soil (cocofiber mixed with things like sand to make it more aerated works well, look up the soil type pothos likes befote you make it) and wait a few months before putting them in the tank.
Earth worm castings and guano are the only completly crab safe fertilisers i can think of. they'll help ur cuttings grow without absorbing harmful materials into their tissues.

Re: Live plants list
Pothos is something that use to be regarded as toxic but many have had great success in their tanks. 3 months is a term commonly thrown around, however i personally think that a minimum of a month after you stop using chems should be suffice and have low concentrations that shouldn't be too much of a worry.
I personally think that using dry ferts made for fish tanks would also be fine. KNO3, K2SO4 and KH2PO4 would be useful macro nutrients to include and still be crab safe, and potentually dosing with epsom salts for Mg and iron chelates if required.

Ok thanks guys!
my mother in law says u can root the cuttings in water and they will grow for ever like that so I think I will try it in dechlorinated water.

if you had a big enough freshwater pond, you could grow a big one in the water and use that as a ladder for them to climb out. I wonder how durable it would be though...
