Ok. Thanks.soilentgringa wrote:Not so much as they necessarily need to be but they are able to be safely insulated.Hermiesguardian wrote:Do ultratherms need to be insulated?wodesorel wrote:I have two Ultratherms coming for the new Ruggie tank, and the plan is use the same fabric/uth/foil/cardboard sandwich for them, too.

If you are having trouble keeping temps high enough you can insulate an ultratherm to boost the heat.

Have you checked Reptile Basics? I believe they have all sizes of Ultratherm, and reasonable price as well.soilentgringa wrote:I really debated this as well because ghe 150 came with one across the back and the previous owners had several smaller UTH's attached to the sides of the tank.
I'm an Ultratherm person 100% so I really considered whether or not I wanted the background, then an Ultratherm, then insulation OR Ultratherm (which would have defeated the purpose of a background as you would mostly see the UTH), then background, then insulation.
Since I ripped my Ultrathermwhen removing it from the old tank, I have been waiting for the size I need to come back into stock to get a new one.
We ended up ditching the background and are getting new plants to replace all the old pinched to death ones.

We have purchased from Bean Farm and Reptile Basics. Amazon has them as well.

Re: Ultratherm?
Here's what I'm thinking...if I attach the background to the back of the tank (by taping the edges) then stick the ultratherms onto the background, obviously there won't be any removing the heaters from the background. I'm not sure I want that permanence. The other thought is can I tape the background on the inside of the tank? Would that be harmful at all to the crabs. Because of the tape.wodesorel wrote:I am getting more and more heat intolerant by the year, so my bedroom is around 65 to 70 in the summer, and I've been waking up to it at 52 some mornings these past few weeks because I have the heat off in here. Most of the time it is around 60-65. I know my Rug likes it toasty, so I figure a little boost to the heater wouldn't hurt.
Sandwiching it also helps the fabric to lay taught, and I can pop the whole thing on and off as one unit rather than mess around with different layers. The insulation is more of a bonus.

Re: Ultratherm?
Is it one of those plastic aquarium backgrounds? Regular packing tape will peel off if you're careful. The better ones are not flimsy!

Yes, it is. Referring to permanance, I meant using the ultratherm self stick on the background. That would be pretty stuck on there.wodesorel wrote:Is it one of those plastic aquarium backgrounds? Regular packing tape will peel off if you're careful. The better ones are not flimsy!

Ultratherm is a brand name. They do not have any adhesive.Hermiesguardian wrote:Yes, it is. Referring to permanance, I meant using the ultratherm self stick on the background. Lol. I just got them and haven't opened them up yet. I assumed they were peel and stick like the Zilla brand I have.soilentgringa wrote:Ultratherm is a brand name. No, you have to use tape. I have always used either packing tape (scotch or 3M), or metal tape for duct work that we just happened to have around.Hermiesguardian wrote:Lol.
