hey, so i’ve had a lot of issues
with heating in my tank for awhile now. it’s usually in the late 70s, which is NOT optimal. i have a UTH on the side of the tank currently (said it was for 30-40 gallons). any good way to insulate my tank? it’s a 40 gallon. at the moment i have an automatic mister and turn it on at the same time as my heat lamp to try and warm up my tank and keep the humidity from
draining.

I recommend Ultratherms, can't go wrong with them.
If you are having trouble with heat, I always battled cold temperatures with a space heater, or throwing a fuzzy blanket over my tank for a while.
I also put hand warmers in a safe place and let those "gas off" some heat temporarily.

I personally like the UTH's on the back of the tank, above the substrate to heat the air. Ultratherm is my preferred brand - you can insulate over them. www.reptilebasics.com or www.beanfarm.comTheCrabLord wrote:hey, so i’ve had a lot of issues

In the meantime, you can use aluminum foil - shiny side facing the inside of the tank - then use cardboard of styrofoam. You can use tape, packaging tape. Do as many layers of this as you would like. IF YOU HAVE A ZOOMED, OR ANY OTHER UTH that has already been insulated (has padding over it) DO NOT INSULATE OVER IT. INSULATE AROUND THE UTH. You do not want a fire hazard. Insulate all three sides of your tank.
If you you have money to spend, you can buy a product called Reflectix. This product can be purchased at Lowe's or Home Depot. It looks like a car shade. A large roll can cost anywhere from $10-$16. Reflectix also makes a tape - this will not insulate your tank. This will only help hang the Reflectix, but so can packaging tape or duct tape. This is what I personally use. This product can be used year after year. It stores great!

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Re: best way to warm up my tank?
40 do need an extra boost because of how wide they are. Most store brands of UTH don't produce enough heat - for instance I use a 30-40 to heat my 10 gallon. The gallon rating is for use with reptiles only, as they need one smaller warm spot and the rest of the tank left cooler. The gallons is so that people don't get too big of one that wouldn't allow a reptile to move and cool down.
