Newbie with UTH question!!

Post by HermieHank » Thu Aug 02, 2018 4:23 pm

Hi! I'm new! I've been reading this message board for a while but I don't think I've posted before now. It's been great learning how to properly care for my son's PP....He just successfully completed his first molt.

Anyway, my question is this. What size UTH should I buy for a 10 gallon tank? 6x8 or 12x8? Also, what brands do you guys recommend? The Zoo Med ones on Amazon have mediocre reviews. TIA!!

For UTHs I usually buy the next size or two up because the size for the tank you're looking for is often too small.

5 PPs: Koa, Moja, Siam, Chella, and Ozark.

Ultratherms are going to be your best bet. They’re cheaper and run warmer than Zoo Med and can be safely insulated if needed (to trap heat).

I’d recommend getting the size that covers the most tank.

For our 10 gallon we had the entire back glass covered with an Ultratherm (11X17). It worked well although it would dry out the substrate near the back of the tank. The drying of the substrate is my only complaint. You will have that with any UTH that goes below the substrate though. Be sure you have a properly functioning humidity gauge. A smaller tank can dry out pretty quickly in the right conditions.

We also hooked up temperature regulators to our ultratherms. About $15-$20 on Amazon. In the summer the tanks were getting into the low 90's. We put them on, set the high temperature and hasn't hit above what they are set at since. You may need to tinker the probe to find a happy medium in your tank for warmer and cooler spots for the crabs.
