I think my crabs ate a blue spotted salamander!?
Ok so I just switched my 17 hermit crabs to a 90 gallon. I will be giving 4 hermit crabs to a good home because ( I already had 17 and they are people I know and see very often plus they have a great setup and wanted these crabs.) Therefore I will be having 13 in a 90 gallon very soon. Anyway a few weeks ago my mother found a blue spotyes salamander. I was not home at the time so she set it in the crabitat thinking it would just hang out with the crabs till I get home so I could see it then release it. But no, I came home to find it gone. We researched more about them to find out they live most of their lives underground!! We went through all the sub moving to the bigger tank and it was gone. We could not find it anywhere.

Oh gosh.... that seems crazy. I guess there’s nothing you can do about it now except watch your crabs for strange behaviors. If it’s true, then r.i.p little salamander

If they’d eaten it you would have found the remains at one point or another. If it seems to have disappeared completely it’s either hiding somewhere or has escaped.

Would you still find the remains as easily though underground? I never like looked really really hard I just sifted the ground with my hand feeling for crabs and salamander. Plus could it have blendid in with the sub or something? I really do not know we examined everything to see if it was hiding and I was leaving like extra meal worms out in the crab food for it in hopes that it would not die. I just don't think it would escape. And if it did I have a salamander in my room!?JoeHermits wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2020 12:00 amIf they’d eaten it you would have found the remains at one point or another. Salamanders need cold and wet, and they also cannot handle salt. I doubt it survived for long in a hot crabitat. Between the crabs and normal decay processes, I also doubt you'd find much more than some super tiny bones.
It may suprise you and has hunkered down inside of something - a friend had a tiger that went missing for an entire year to where she tore the tank apart and thought someone had stolen it, and then it popped up out of nowhere one day!
