Brand for small amount of sand?

Post by Plasmoc » Fri Sep 25, 2020 11:46 pm

I’ve been using moist eco earth without playsand for years, but my tank just developed our first ever algae bloom so I thought I’d try sand and eco earth mix since I need to replace all the substrate etc.

I read the sticky and see Quikrete and Sakrete play sand are recommended, but everything I see is 50lb bags!

My tank is 16 gallons so 50lbs is way too much! I have nowhere to store that much excess sand either.

Any suggestions of a band to buy that’s smaller amount? I found these online..
- Super Naturals is free of calcium carbonate, but I’m not sure about Quartz.
- Pure Play Sand contains sand, silica, & quartz.

50 pounds of play sand mixed with one brick of EE won't be too much for your tank!

For your size tank, a 50 pound bag of sand and two blocks of EE would give you about 6 to 7 inches. Every 10 pounds of sand takes up the space of about one very packed down block of EE.

The Pure playsand looks like it would be safe, just obviously very overpriced. I just bought a 50lb bag of Quikrete for $4.66 last weekend.

Don't get the moonlight sand, it's super fine and acts like quicksand when moistened. I use it in my fishtanks. If you wanted a Caribsea product, try the Sunset Gold, which may very well just be playsand. I didn't notice a difference when I set an aquarium up with it last month. The price is crazy high though! A few of their other sand colors, which are actually naturally different colored quartz sands, would also work well.

Wow I didn’t realize! I was planning to do 2/3ee 1/3 sand because i worry about the weight of the tank.

Is that bad? I saw on another thread that it’s ok go change the ratio... or is that controversial?

You can certainly change the ratio if you're worried about weight. The 5:1 ratio is just a guideline. Image
