Need to clean tank

Post by bapdvm » Wed Oct 27, 2021 9:55 am

During the pandemic I finally have learned (with the help of this site, too!) how to better care for my hermit crabs. One of my concerns is that my substrate is not deep enough. I have bought new sand and coconut fiber....but I never have all 5 crabs up on the surface at one time. I have a 55 gal tank, so I don't have an extra tank that I could set up while waiting for the buried ones to surface. Any suggestions?

I was told that you can layer more substrate on the top.. but if they are molting.. i'd be very careful and worried about collapsing caves.

Jlmills is right. You can add an inch of substrate every 24 hours, but don't pack it down. Also, don't remove any buried objects that may cause a tunnel collapse if taken out. Just put the sub around them.
