Controlling condensation help

Post by MusicalRose » Thu Aug 18, 2022 10:47 am

I'm new to Hermit Crabs in this past year. I've done a lot of research through this forum and other resources. I had a 10 gallon for my OG 2 medium PPs, but I've upgraded to a 30 gallon (and added two tiny rescued PPs). With the larger tank upgrade, I have a condensation problem. Seems to only be on the front of the tank. I'd love some suggestions on how to reduce/eliminate

Quick Tank facts:
Size : 30 gallons
Temp : I have the tank set to 77F with regulator (digital thermometer)
Humidity : Always 90+ (digital Hydrometer)
Substrate : 1:5 @ 6-7" deep - dry to touch at the surface, but is sandcastle moldable just below.
Water pools : 2 x 2 cup glass containers with small bubblers on lowest setting (ie they are not splashing)
Shell shop - lined with moss (always condensation on the walls of this as well)

Looking for help on how to manage condensation, other than wiping down the inside of the front of my tank multiple times a day. I would love any suggestions on how to get my humidity a little more steady and potentially down a bit to the 80-90 range. I am not misting the tank. We do have AC, so I'm wondering if it makes sense to drop the temp in the tank down to 75 to combat surface condensation? Remove the moss in the shell shop for potentially holding too much water? At this point I'm just trying to avoid something horrid like a flood, as one of the rescues I just brought home has disappeared under ground to potentially molt.

Hit me up with your thoughts. Please and thanks

Does the water level in the pools seem visibly lower?
What sort of bridge/ladder do you have for the crabbies to get in/out of the pools?
Where are your pools located, esp. in relation to the heat mat?
What kind of lid do you have on your tank?

My first thought would be to turn off the bubblers for a few hours and see if it makes a difference.

The water level doesn't seem super low in the pools. I just started using bubblers yesterday and the condensation was an issue before hand, if evaporation was being considered.
The pools are along the side of the tank , UTH is taped along entire back of tank.
I have ladders created by egg crate covered with a layer of kids embroidery mesh (plastic).
Lid is Acrylic, and covers entire tank top (with the exception of one corner allowing for tubing/wires and such).

Thanks

Hmm.
I'm not sure that lowering the temp would do any good: hopefully somebody with more experience can chime in!
It only appearing on the front wall is probably just because that side is farthest from the heat mat and therefore cooler.

Is the moss in the shell shop the only moss in the tank? Does it feel soggy, moist, or damp to the touch?
I've overmisted a couple times by accident and had a bit of condensation, but never a consistent problem. Mine usually appears as fog: is yours fog, droplets, or both?

High humidity can be lowered by venting or adding DRY moss to absorb extra humidity (remove and repeat).

Sorry for so many questions! I'm not the top expert here but figured others would be more able to help if they had more information.

Condensation occurs because there is a temp difference between the room and the tank. So lowering the temp in the tank or raising the temp in the room can both decrease condensation. To decrease humidity, increase the venting and air flow to the tank.
Remember that a flood will only happen if moisture is being added to the tank - so from the water bowls or misting etc. If it is just condensation that is from the moisture in the sub, it won't hurt for it to drip back into the sub. And if you vent your tank more, more moisture will escape the tank, so you may need to add water to the sub to prevent it drying out too much.

Thank you @curlysister. I was not aware that a flood will not occur if the moisture causing condensation is preexisting within the tank. I've currently not needed to add extra moisture so I won't worry about flooding at this point.

Things I did do:
- lowered the tank temp by one degree.
- cut out a small piece of the corner of the tank cover kitty-corner to where the tubing/wiring is to allow some air current thru the tank. (this can be
taped up in future if humidity retention becomes problematic)
- Added another 1.5" of substrate

While I did have some condensation on the tank this morning, it wasn't nearly as bad as the last couple of days. Humidity reading as 89.

So hopefully that works. Thanks for all the suggestions.
