New tank smells like gas

Post by 3littleherms » Thu Apr 25, 2024 7:21 pm

So I just pulled out a 40 gal tank from the garage and my father had stored gasoline and oil jugs in it. I cleaned it out well but it still smells of gas. I need to put my babies in it soon because there old tank is going to some more critters I'm getting in. What do I do!

Def don't put them in the tank if there are still gas fumes coming from it. Not only could the fumes be toxic to the crabs, it could be toxic for you to breathe it in, in an enclosed room (like a bedroom). I know you cleaned it, but maybe you could leave it outside for a few days too and let some fresh air hit it.

Gas can be eventually be scrubbed and rinsed clean off of glass, but I'm not sure how well it absorbs into silicon and I know it can break down and destroy silicon. The silicon may need to be cut off and replaced to make the tank safe. Personally I'd trash the tank and replace it completely at one of the $1 a gallon sales, I don't take chances with inverts/fish and petrochemicals.
