Substrate Question - Should I Bake This Sand?

Post by LavendarCrab » Sat Oct 05, 2024 5:33 pm

So I got some washed, screened playsand from Walmart for my crabitat. I've heard you can use it straight out of the bag if it's prewashed, but when I opened the bag it was a bit damp, not completely dry. Would it be necessary to bake it to remove potential bacteria? Our kitchen is small and busy; it would be a huge hassle and I was hoping to avoid this step.

Also the bag came with a hole at the bottom - would have picked up one without a hole but couldn't find one :(

A quick response would be appreciated, because I have to get the crabitat up today and won't have time this next week.

I've bought bags of sand that were a bit damp before and used them with no issues. I let sand bags sit outside for months and then use them too. I know you said there was a hole in the bag (I assume nothing huge or ripped open looking?), but I'd still use it as long as the sand doesn't have any funky smell and looks normal.

Totally agree with CL77...I too have left bags of sand on the porch outside through at least 3 seasons, and then used it no problem!

Ok thanks! Forgot to respond to this, but I ended up using it plain.
