Night Light?

Post by Guest » Tue May 26, 2009 11:10 pm

I'm curious if hermit crabs need light at night. I'm not talking like bright daylight, but like moonlight. I know hermit crabs are most active at night, and I want to make sure that they can see their surroundings, more specifically the new shells I got for them :)

I have a modified computer fan (120mm) that circulates the air around the crabitat, and a cool way I could think about adding light at night would be to get an LED fan. I wonder what color would be best for the hermit crabs at night! I was thinking blue or white.

I just have to find my soldering iron :(

I'm still new to this too, but I don't think they *need* the light, but there are options if you want it. Exo Terra's Night Glo (moon glo) bulbs or red bulbs are preferred, from what I read on here.

I've also seen that The Crabbage Patch has an LED one, but if you need it for heat too then LED's won't suffice. If you just need it for the light, then it's probably a good option because it seems to be all inclusive (no fixture required). A link to the site is available from the 'Links' drop down menu to the right. :)

They don't "need" the light, but it doesn't bother them one way or the other to have it or no.

Mostly it's that crabs need heat, and a convenient way of getting 24/7 heat is with a nightglo/moonglo bulb. It doesn't emit the UV light that would trick the crabs into thinking it's daytime, so it can be on all night without affecting them.

Yeah, I use a moon glow lamp at night and a regular day lamp in the day.
The moon glow is really only used to give some night heat. But the crabs do seem to like it.
