Yea the frozen package shrimp they add sodium nitrate or something so they absorb more water and look bigger. I guess its the previously frozen shrimp you can purchase at the butchers block is probably the same packaged stuff...but I will look into it. Chicken liver thats a good idea freezing it and then shaving off as you need it...whats the recommended daily portion?
Right now the little one is buried and the big one has been sitting near the little mound that was made while the little one was digging and he hasnt really done much. He loves being held and normally I will put him by his food dish or water dish when I put him down...he'll usually munch a little then go back to his spot. Honey is the most recent favourite

I put maybe 3/4 teaspoon in every few days, and when I had 10 crabs up and running around it would disappear by morning. There seriously wasn't even any residue left in the shell.MythrilDelight wrote: Chicken liver thats a good idea freezing it and then shaving off as you need it...whats the recommended daily portion?

I have a question about that....her feeding pyramid...the number of days it says on it...for example "3 days" is that the amount of days you should feed them only fat? or is that like a rotation. I want to get my crabbies on a feeding schedule to make sure they're getting all the necessary nutrients available to them.

Hey Wodesorel, I went to the butcher at a local grocery store and the shrimp they have...they are previously frozen and frozen in a brine. I didnt go for it because I wasnt sure if that brine was made with iodized salt or not.
I did pick up some Foster Farm chicken livers...I was told Foster Farm doesnt use preservatives or hormones or anything like that.
I also got a coconut to give them a little bit of coconut and a bit of the husk.

Actually, I think it means that you can include fat in their diet for about 3 days a week along with the other food types.MythrilDelight wrote: ...the number of days it says on it...for example "3 days" is that the amount of days you should feed them only fat? or is that like a rotation.
Of course, the feeding schedule is not set in stone, as land hermit crabs can skip periods of feeding during the week and not have any apparent ill effects. Unlike warm blooded pets, and being invertebrates, land hermit crabs do not really need too strict a daily feeding regimen and long periods of non-eating/fasting in between periods of feeding is a normal occurrence during the week or even during a month akin to, say, a tarantula (if you ever had one or more).
However, if you've never had either a tarantula or land hermit crab, I would provide food daily, but not too worry if they are not eating. As for me, as I've had land hermits for a while now (as well as tarantulas and some other inverts) and I can somewhat assume as to how much they can eat during intermolt periods without me wasting too much uneaten food. Generally, I use the link as the guide more as to what to feed the crab than as to when to feed the crab.

I managed to find some fresh shrimp without additives at my local grocery store. As a bonus the shrimp was expiring that day and was half-price. You can find crab-safe food in the oddest places, really.MythrilDelight wrote:Hey Wodesorel, I went to the butcher at a local grocery store and the shrimp they have...they are previously frozen and frozen in a brine. Hmm maybe I will try a different grocery store...I will say that the my big crabbie is being very possessive of his coconut. He dragged it from his food dish to his little groove he made in the sand lol...and when I go to pick him up he frantically grabs the chunk to bring it with him. Little one is still buried. Going to try the chicken liver tonight
