ReptiSun - which one to use??

This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

sorry I am late on this, and if somebody already said this, but I would go for the highest rating you can afford of reptisun(its the bet brand).

Also if you have glass over the light it renders the whole this USELESS since UV rays can't penetrate glass. So listen up everybody

UV RAYS DON'T PENETRATE GLASS SO RE RIG YOUR SYSTEM OR YOUR WAISTING MONEY.

Ok caps just to get peoples attention saying "why is she yelling?"

I personally say, save money, feed raspberries and take the crabs outside once a month for 10 min.

I have glass tops that the lights sit on and go into the tank. Right now they have a 50/50 bulb for marine life in them.

Does everyone have an open aquarium -- or mesh top for their set up -- or lights inside the aquarium?
Well, that's a tough one. You certainly shouldn't leave the entire top of the crabitat uncovered if you'll be gone all day and can't monitor the humidity.

How are you setting up the lights, exactly-- a hood, right? Those long rectangular things that you screw the bulbs into and rest on top of the tank? Perhaps you can cover half or two-thirds of the top and leave only the section directly below the light hood open.

If your glass lid is the kind that has a hinge down the center, could you prop half the lid open and rest the light hood over the uncovered half?

If you can get a wire mesh lid, maybe you could cut out a rectangular section below the hood, leaving just enough to support it, and keep the rest of the mesh covered with pieces of plexiglass or plastic wrap to hold humidity in.

It is an aquarium... that would contain fish...the top is glass hinged (both sides) then there are two fluorescent lights that sit on top of the glass sections (they were replacement lights so they are not perfect size for the openings under them).

I personally say, save money, feed raspberries and take the crabs outside once a month for 10 min.
Does raspberries have UVB rays?

I hung the fluorescent light fixture in my crabitat (75g) using baling wire and zip-ties. I just made hooks from the wire and set 2 of them over the side of the tank to hold up one side of the light strip, and then zip-tied the other side to the center brace.

The hermies don't climb on the light fixture?

The way I have my hemp nets and the airline tube (bubbler pool) I find them hanging on the top edges and center bar. They are creative in their climbing.

I would hate for anything to hurt them.

I just got a 30 gallon long tank .... was a salt water tank. This has the plastic hood with the light strip over the glass section. I'm going to need to come up with something ...

If the UVB is primarily for Vitamin D requirement if I provide D enriched foods would that be sufficient?

If not, I'm thinking that I could take the back glass piece off at the hinge(I hope) put a piece of heavy duty wire mesh in the glass' place and put the light on top of that. It would have to be heavy duty to be able to support the light fixtures.

Any thoughts on the above idea?

I went to the farm store...purchased some wire mesh --- replaced one of the glass sections with the wire mesh....and now I have it so the light can shine through.... :):):)

OK...now I have to go and buy the light ... I wasn't 100% sold that it would work....

I'm betting the crabbies will be climbing on that section of the top...they are amazing... as I seen them climb the top...just around the edges...

Thanks for the information that the light would not work through the glass...that would have been a HUGH mistake on my part .... and not helping them.

Dang... just when I thought I was getting it right! I have the ReptiGlo and MoonGlows.. but I have the glass lid because I've been having humidity issues.

I just put the MoonGlo's on last night and let me tell you.. my crabs (or at least one of them) was all over the tank last night. All 3 food dishes, 2 water dishes and new moss pit were all hit last night!

I'll come up with something about this light issue though.

I haven't done the moon glow because I've not found the lighting mechanism that I want to use.... :(:(:( I want to use something that I don't have to move.... and that my kids won't knock over.... I was looking at the floor lamps that have several movable light...and have the coming to point to the tank.... I only need a small amount of heat now...and more in winter....but I really would love to watch them at night....under their natural light.

But for the Sun... I have found wire cage --- similar to building a rabbit cage...to go under the light --- so I have 1/2 glass and have wire squares--- with the handle on the glass and the center stills folds.... so the light works as it is suppose to.
